Hanging Around

It's all the rage to split a building into flats and Ince Hall in Wigan is no exception.

Before it changed, the hall was owned by the Gerard family for seven centuries.

One of the Gerards lay dying, and a lawyer was sent for to make his will. The lawyer came too late. He tried to bring the owner back to life by rubbing his body with the hand of Saint Edmund Arrowsmith. It revived him long enough to bequeath the hall to the lawyer.

A violent quarrel between the lawyer and the late owner's daughter ensued. As a result, the lawyer killed the girl. She avenged herself by hanging in the air wherever he went.
