Mab's Gallery
There's always been a dividing line between the rich and the poor. The problems start when people cross the line to find marital bliss.
A good example took place between the marriage of the Welsh Knight William Bradshaw and the peasant girl Mabel Norris.
You can imagine William's horror at returning to Haigh Hall in palmer's dress (the habit worn by all those who had made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem) to find his wife married to another Welsh Knight. This was the only way she could save her family from poverty after believing he died at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314.
William pursued the Welsh Knight to Newton-Le-Willows and killed him at the Bloody Stone.
He got outlawed for a year and a day for his crime, and Mabel had to walk to a cross every week for bigamy. They used to apologize to crosses for their sins.
Her restless spirit caused a gallery to be named after her. She now haunts the hall's golf course too.
